It can be difficult to keep up with everything Rivers Cuomo and Weezer have been up to lately — but they do have a new record, Van Weezer, due out May 7.

It’s the “heavy metal-influenced” album the band originally intended on releasing last year, ahead of the Hella Mega Tour with Green Day and Fall Out Boy, only to have the COVID-19 pandemic postpone the tour. The stadium trek is on track for later this summer, as of now, and the album will indeed be released soon. It comes on the heels of OK Human, the stripped-down album the band released in late January after recording it during the pandemic.

On Wednesday, Weezer shared a preview in the form of “I Need Some of That,” a guitar-heavy anthem about Rivers and his childhood rock star dreams:

It’s the latest song shared from Van Weezer, following “Hero”:

“The End of the Game”:

And “Beginning of the End”:

Some more on the new record, per a news release:

Van Weezer, the band’s fifteenth studio album, is produced by Suzy Shinn (Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy).  The inspiration for this album derives from the deepest roots of Weezer – metal!  What has metal got to do with Weezer, you ask? In his earliest years, Rivers was a huge KISS fan; Brian was a big Black Sabbath fan; Pat worshipped at the altar of Van Halen and Rush; Scott loved Slayer and Metallica. The last time this vein of harder rock was mined by Weezer was on their much-loved 2002 album Maladroit; Van Weezer is primed to take that album’s sonics many steps further courtesy of producer Suzy Shinn.
