We’re only two weeks removed from the tragic passing of guitar legend Eddie Van Halen, but there are already rumors swirling on the internet regarding the band’s potential future — and they’ve reached Eddie’s son, Wolfgang Van Halen, who addressed the chatter on social media on Sunday.

Despite apparently not being rooted in anything credible, the rumor had it that Wolfgang would replace Eddie as Van Halen’s lead guitarist, with Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony rejoining the band on vocals and bass:

When Wolfgang addressed the rumor, he made it abundantly clear: This is nonsense, and is not in the possibility whatsoever:

This is just a shitty lie attempting to capitalize on these awful times. Please stop with this. Anyone peddling this shit is not only hurting the fans, but hurting me and my family.

This is the harsh reality facilitated by social media, which can amplify even the most threadbare of “rumors” to a large enough scale to reach — and, quite obviously, bring pain to — the subjects involved, and it’s tough to see play out like this.

Eddie Van Halen passed away on Oct. 6 at the age of 65 after a “long and arduous” battle with throat cancer, as announced by Wolfgang in a social media post:

A true “guitar hero” of the highest order, Eddie Van Halen’s influence was unrivaled, his legacy unmatched, his fans among the tens of millions around the world. His family deserves to grieve just as anybody else’s would — without rumors and chatter bringing them more pain.

May Eddie rest in peace … and may the Van Halen family find peace, as well.
