“For Real” was a song from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers that was part of the recent The Best of Everything: The Definitive Career Spanning Hits Collection, which was released to commemorate the untouchable legacy of Petty’s music and life.
To further honor Petty’s memory and the influence he had on generations of musicians, a new cover of the song was premiered on SiriusXM featuring a fantastic array of musicians.
“For Real – For Tom” is a tribute from Jakob Dylan, Amos Lee, Dhani Harrison, Willie Nelson and sons Lukas Nelson and Micah Nelson, and adapts the song into a reverent singalong that fully captures the heart and soul of Petty’s songwriting style.
For comparison’s sake, here’s the original version of “For Real.”
Even better than the song itself is the fact that all proceeds from sales and streams from the song will benefit the Midnight Mission, a Los Angeles-based organization that Tom Petty held dear and contributed to throughout his life.
Geared around supporting the homeless community in the Los Angeles area, the Midnight Mission’s website describes itself as follows:
The Midnight Mission is the oldest continuously operating human service organization in the Los Angeles region. Centered in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles, The Midnight runs one of the most efficient direct service operations in the country. With only five executive managers throughout its 100 year history, The Midnight has been a consistent beacon of light for those with nowhere else to turn.
