Beginning on March 27, a new documentary film telling the inspirational story of legendary singer (and 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction nominee as a solo artist) Tina Turner will premiere exclusively on HBO Max.

Titled Tina, the documentary has been in the works for a while, first being announced in 2018 at the Cannes Film Festival. It aims to tell the story of Turner’s early days (born Anna Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tn., in 1939), through her comeback in the 1980s after divorcing Ike Turner in 1978.

A trailer for the documentary was premiered on Tuesday. It features a voiceover from Turner, summing up her remarkable story:

“My mother, she used to sit in the window of the kitchen while she was making dinner on Sundays. I used to just watch her. One day, she wasn’t in that window. She was never in it again. I wanted her to come for me. And I waited. She never did. And it’s all right, you know why? I’m a girl from a cotton field that pulled myself above the destruction and the mistakes. And I’m here for you.”

More details, per the trailer:

Simply the best.

With a wealth of never-before-seen footage, audio tapes, personal photos, and new interviews, including with the singer herself, TINA presents an unvarnished and dynamic account of the life and career of music icon Tina Turner.

Angela Bassett, Oprah Winfrey, journalist Kurt Loder, playwright Katori Hall and Tina’s husband Erwin Bach are among the interviews in the intimate documentary. #HBO #HBODocs
