Third Eye Blind made waves last week with an emotionally charged appearance at a fundraising event near the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Singer Stephan Jenkins aired out some of his grievances against the GOP and current social issues, and on Monday the band followed that up with a new song along the same vein.
Titled Cop Vs. Phone Girl, the mostly acoustic tune concerns issues in the news a lot lately: claims of police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Lyrically, Jenkins says the song was specifically inspired by a 2015 incident at Spring Valley High in South Carolina that made him recall his experiences at a school for children with emotional issues.
As Jenkins said in a press release,
“Sometimes, we had to restrain kids who were having violent outbursts. We were trained not to frighten them much less cause harm. The contrast really hit home to me just how surreal and insane this incident was.”

Cop Vs. Phone Girl is the first song off 3EB’s upcoming EP, We Are Drugs, due out sometime soon. It’s the next batch of new material since the band’s 2015 album Dopamine, which was their first new LP in six years.
Check out the band’s upcoming tour dates below and stay tuned for more about the EP…
