You can’t think about early 2000s indie/rock without The Shins coming to mind.

Not only were they Natalie Portman’s favorite buzzworthy band, but front man James Mercer had a knack for now-classic songs bursting with life and quirky energy in a way only he and his band mates could carry out.

Starting on July 12 in San Francisco, the Shins will celebrate their debut record, 2001’s Oh, Inverted World, with a special 21st anniversary tour detailed on Thursday. The record will be played in full each night, as well as “a nightly rotation of additional fan favorites and deep cuts,” per a news release.

“Everything was so tongue-in-cheek in the indie world of the ’90s,” Mercer said of the era that spawned Oh, Inverted World. “I remember feeling a longing for some sort of romance in music again, something earnest, like a real attempt at some emotional language.”

The album was reissued last year to commemorate its 20th anniversary.
