The Go-Go’s will release a new song on July 31. This is big news, considering the iconic all-female Los Angeles punk/new wave band hasn’t released a new recording in 20 years.

“Club Zero” was announced on Wednesday, and its release is tied to the new documentary film The Go-Go’s, which will premiere on Showtime on Aug. 1.

Footage of the band (Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Jane Wiedlin (guitar), Charlotte Caffey (guitar), Kathy Valentine (bass) and Gina Schock (drums) working on an early version of “Club Zero” is featured in the new doc. Watch a trailer for the film below:

More on the song, via a news release:

The self-produced track was created via email exchanges amongst bandmembers and recorded at Lucky Recording in S.F. with Co-Producer/Mixer/Engineer Travis Kasperbauer and in Los Angeles with Lead Vocal Recording/Producer Gabe Lopez. As the band’s stance has always been fervent when it comes to relevant issues, the anthemic, punk-infused paean arrives just in time for a world in desperate need of a voice of optimism and change:

“HEY WE’VE GOT SOMETHING TO SAY
‘GONNA MAKE THE WORLD SHAKE’
READY OR NOT HERE WE ARE”

The Go-Go’s burst onto the music scene with 1981’s Beauty and the Beat, setting in action a string of hit records and acclaim that earned the group the title “The most successful all-female rock band of all time.”

The Go-Go’s planned to promote the upcoming documentary with a special 2020 summer tour, though those plans were scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The shows will be rescheduled for 2021:
