The Doors Reveal Plans for ‘Day of the Doors’ Event in Los Angeles on Jan. 4

January 4 holds a special significance within Los Angeles, as it’s officially the Day of the Doors. So named back in late 2016, the Day of the Doors was initially put together to honor the 50th anniversary of the music and legacy of Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger, John Densmore and Ray Manzarek, and it’s continuing once again in 2020.

On Saturday, January 4, the Day of the Doors will take place in downtown Los Angeles, and offers fans a unique opportunity to recreate the iconic artwork from the album cover for Morrison Hotel, the Doors’ fifth studio album released in 1970 — as 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the classic record.

That iconic shot was taken by famed rock photographer Henry Diltz, and Day of the Doors 2020 will allow fans a chance to pay homage with their own photo, time permitting.

In 2012, Diltz spoke with Rock Cellar about his incredible career working with some of the biggest music acts ever, and the story of how the Morrison Hotel album cover came about is pretty good:

“We got right in the Volkswagen van and drove down and looked at it. Obviously that would make a great cover with them behind the window. We took some pictures that day, just with Ray and Jim sitting behind the window. A week later we went down with the group. When we walked in with four or five guys the guy behind the desk said, ‘no, you can’t shoot in here.  You can’t take pictures until you get permission from the owner. He’s out of town.’

So I had the guys come outside to take pictures in front of the window so they couldn’t stop us. Then the guy left the desk. “Quick, guys–!” and they ran in and got in place.”

There’s an official Facebook event page up for Day of the Doors on January 4, and it explains the opportunities available to fans, from a free RSVP for a photo-op with the hotel window to $30 for an autograph session with guitarist Robby Krieger and screening of the When You’re Strange documentary, up to a $50 ticket that includes a signing/conversation with Krieger and a sneak preview screening of the upcoming Ray Manzarek tribute film Break On Thru.

Full details and a breakdown of the day’s events below — sure to be a must-visit for Doors fans who are able to make it to Los Angeles that day!
