'The Day of the Doors' Set for Jan. 4 in Los Angeles, Robby Krieger and John Densmore to Take Part
On January 4, 1967, Jim Morrison and the Doors announced their arrival with their landmark self-titled debut album. With that classic LP about to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the city of Los Angeles has proclaimed that January 4, 2017 will be dubbed The Day of the Doors.
That’s the day a special event will take place in Venice, California, specifically the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Windward Avenue, and will be attended by surviving Doors members Robby Krieger and John Densmore as well as family members of Morrison and Ray Manzarek.
A statement about the special day from Densmore:
“Very apropos that The Doors are jumpstarting our 50th in Venice where we started. Our songs sprang up out of the Pacific like beautiful, edible silver fish… and apparently the world took a big bite.”
And Los Angeles City Councilman Mike Bonin’s take on the festivities and the Doors’ place in history:
“Venice is a place where many have chased their pleasures or dug their treasures. It is a place that birthed The Doors and taught us all to cherish the funky, weird, and world-renowned vibe that Jim, Ray, Robby, and John helped make famous. I am very happy to be amongst the feast of friends celebrating The Doors’ 50th anniversary, and I thank the band, their management, and the Venice Chamber of Commerce for making this celebration possible.”
As a tribute to the Doors’ lasting legacy, here’s a 2012 video for the song “L.A. Woman,” featuring many visual homages to the city and culture of Los Angeles:
