The Black Crowes Release ‘1972,’ a New EP ft. Covers of Rolling Stones, T. Rex, Bowie and More

If you’ve ever heard a song by The Black Crowes — and you definitely have, by now — their love of what came before is evident, their roots in the soulful blues/rock of the 1960s and ’70s going a long way toward shaping the sound Chris Robinson and his brethren developed.
A new Amazon Original EP, 1972, was released digitally this week and finds the Crowes paying “tribute to the 50th anniversary of some of the best rock-and-roll during its prime,” per a news release.

This means, naturally, carefully selected covers of some formative tracks from acts including The Rolling Stones, T. Rex, David Bowie, Little Feat, Rod Stewart and The Temptations.
It was previewed recently with “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone,” which they also performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night:

The Black Crowes will also head out on another leg of their Shake Your Money Maker anniversary tour later this year.
Accompanying the Robinson brothers on the road in this new version of the Black Crowes will be longtime bassist Sven Pipien, Brian Griffin on drums, Joel Robinow on keyboard and Isaiah Mitchell on guitar, as well as backup singers Mackenzie Adams and Leslie Grant.
