Take a Trip Through Your Own Mind with Tame Impala’s Psychedelic New Album ‘The Slow Rush’ (Listen)

0

For Kevin Parker, the central creative force behind Tame Impala, his fourth studio album is all about time — memories, nostalgia, all of it — as expressed through some intensely psychedelic compositions.

The anticipated new album from Parker’s acclaimed indie/rock project is out now, and from start to finish it’s an exhilarating ride. Parker previewed it with a few songs spread across the past several months, with one of the most recent, “Lost in Yesterday,” acting as a thesis of sorts, summing up the album’s themes with a music video you may want to watch a few times to fully appreciate:

Watching that video and hearing the song, it’s hard to shake the lyrical phrase “Eventually terrible memories turn into great ones,” isn’t it?

The album’s 12 songs fly by in just under an hour, captivating the listener all the while. At the risk of shaping the experience of anybody who turns on The Slow Rush, this quote from Parker in a recent news release sums up the album succinctly:

“A lot of the songs carry this idea of time passing, of seeing your life flash before your eyes, being able to see clearly your life from this point onwards. I’m being swept by this notion of time passing. There’s something really intoxicating about it.”

That phrase, being “swept up by this notion of time passing” — that’s pretty much what it’s like listening to the album. Before you know it, the record’s done … but unlike the key lyrics in “Lost in Yesterday” referenced above, the experience of hearing the album is one you’ll want to return to frequently.
