Sum 41 has a new album, Order In Decline, set for release on July 19 — and if anybody was curious whether the Canadian pop-punk/metal band had plans to get heavy for this record, the answer seems to be a resounding yes.
On Tuesday, the band premiered a music video for a track called “A Death In The Family,” which features some aggressive riffs and that classic Sum 41 sound that put the band on the map back nearly two decades ago. Check it out:
This is the second song released so far from the album, following debut single “Out For Blood”:
Order in Decline features material written by front man Deryck Whibley, particularly his reactions to the world around him as he sees it today:
Unconsciously, Whibley saw lyrics reflecting his reactions to seeing the pervasive division, racism and hate around the world, even more so punctuated by the repulsive social and political turmoil invading his own home nations of the United States and Canada. “The last thing I wanted to do was write a social or political protest record, and Order In Decline is not that,” Whibley clarifies. Instead, Order in Decline is a burst of uninhibited feeling, a page out of his journal, a window into his soul that reflects on extremely personal and vulnerable events, because as he confesses, “It’s also very hard not to have feelings about everything that’s going on in the world.”
Whibley also produced, mixed and engineered the album at his home studio.
The band’s new album will be the follow-up to 2016’s 13 Voices, which saw the return of original guitarist Dave Baksh — who provided much of Sum 41’s harder-edged metal/punk elements over the years.
Sum 41 will be co-headlining the inaugural Rockstar Energy Drink DISRUPT Festival this Summer on select dates throughout the United States and Canada. For more information, head to https://rockstardisrupt.com/.
