Stream Sleater-Kinney’s New Album ‘The Center Won’t Hold,’ Produced by St. Vincent

0

On Friday, Sleater-Kinney returned with The Center Won’t Hold, an anticipated new album produced by Annie Clark, better known as St. Vincent.

It’s a big moment in the band’s career, for sure, but its release is a bittersweet thing, considering drummer Janet Weiss announced her departure from the band in July:

That was a big decision for Weiss, especially as the rest of Sleater-Kinney — vocalist/guitarist Carrie Brownstein and guitarist/vocalist Corin Tucker — were poised to release a big album. Ostensibly, the direction the band’s music went during the production of this album was a factor in Weiss’ decision to leave, as implied in her statement above.

That new direction led to The Center Won’t Hold, which at times definitely wears production stamp of St. Vincent, such as on pre-release songs like “Hurry On Home”:

The end result of the record is one that obviously might divide fans given Weiss’ stature and longevity in the group prior to her leaving, but it’s also a pretty enthralling listen, given what Clark brought to the studio production-wise.
