Silversun Pickups’ New Butch-Vig Produced Album ‘Widow’s Weeds’ is a Powerful, Emotional Journey (Listen)

Silversun Pickups have always had a dynamic, engaging sound incorporating haunting song structures and resonant vocals, but the Los Angeles-based rock/indie band hit a new gear on the new album, Widow’s Weeds, which was released on Friday. Click here to pick up a copy.
For this album, the band’s fifth full-length and the follow-up to 2015’s Better Nature, Butch Vig was enlisted to lend his legendary producing chops to the proceedings. The result is one of the most captivating listens of the band’s career, which is saying a lot given the wealth of engaging material they’ve churned out over the years.
The tone is set by album opener “Neon Wound”:

And lead single, “It Doesn’t Matter Why,” which served as the first preview of the record a few weeks back.

Said vocalist Brian Aubert in a press release statement about the album:
“This was the first album where we were open. We were exposed. I see how that can be scary to people, but for us we really thrived on that.”
That sense of exposure clearly led to some of the best songwriting of SSPU’s catalog to date. If you’ve ever dug any of their breakout songs, such as “Lazy Eye” or “Panic Switch,” there’s sure to be something on Widow’s Weeds that will “click” in the same way.
