The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus was the Stones‘ TV special that was filmed in 1968 and featured a quirky setup (literally a circus, with actual circus performers and a list of participating musical acts that still shocks director Michael Lindsay-Hogg to this day, as he told us in a recent feature).

Today, this iconic and quirky moment in the Stones’ vaunted history was released as a special 4K Blu-ray/CD/LP edition, marking the first time it’s been unearthed in such formats. It’s truly a dazzling package:

Rock and Roll Circus is available now as a 2-CD/Blu-ray/DVD set,  the DVD/4K edition, the Blu-ray/4K edition, the 2-CD Expanded Edition and a limited 3-LP set.

To fully appreciate the scope of this project, here’s an excerpt from our chat with director Michael Linsday-Hogg on just what went into putting it all together:

Michael Lindsay-Hogg: Being a part of The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus TV special was a good time. It started with me doodling a circle and then it ended up six weeks later standing there and realizing I was part of an event, which was an unusual one. During the shooting, I had plenty on my mind but I also realized this was a one-time only event. Because of Ready Steady Go, which was a weekly television show — I brought in all my camera men from that show — I was used to the kind of pressure that you have to get it done. It was a really long day, but we managed to pull it off.
