Say what you will about Nickelback — the Canadian rock band has long been the butt of many jokes in “cool” music communities, despite selling more than 50 million records worldwide and therefore being one of the most successful bands ever (shop their music here in our Rock Cellar Store) — and the guys in the band are very much aware of their “reputation” across social media.

They get it.

So when Nickelback had new material of some sort to release on Aug. 14, the band knew what it had to do: Tease it on social media. As a result, “OH NO, NICKELBACK IS DOING SOMETHING” was the discussion across Twitter, with the band’s name residing in the Trending Topics.

As for the teaser, it began with this:

Some fans in the comments noted that the clip seen above sounds a bit like “Follow You Home,” the opening track to the band’s 2005 album All The Right Reasons. And the group is releasing a 15th anniversary reissue of the album in October, so maybe this new teaser is related to that …

Whatever it is, and whatever Nickelback has in store for Aug. 14’s reveal, two things are certain: Some folks will like it and some won’t. Either way, the band will assuredly retain its control over the “meme-ification” of its very existence.

That’s how you prove your worth in these confusing times.
