Earlier this week, the internet went wild when Nickelback, the alt/rock/grunge band everybody loves to make a public show of hating on social media, teased something:

“OH NO!” was the collective groan of social media, fearful of Chad Kroeger and the multi-platinum rockers returning with new music.

Despite the groans, the band “gets it.” Its social media presence pokes fun at all the razzing the band takes on a daily basis:

The new release came on Friday, but it probably wasn’t what some were expecting. This is actually the second unexpected “Devil Went Down to Georgia” cover from an established rock band to be shared in recent weeks. In late July, Korn and Yelawolf premiered a collaborative tribute of their own:

Two totally different covers from opposite sites of the rock and roll spectrum serve as a pretty solid representation of the reverence musicians hold for “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” wouldn’t you say?

While Nickelback’s big news wasn’t about a new original song, the band will be releasing a 15th anniversary reissue of its 2005 album All the Right Reasons in October.
