Surprise: Here’s “The Foundations of Decay,” a brand new song from My Chemical Romance that marks the first new material from the iconic punk/emo band since 2014:.

This surprise-release track landed on streaming platforms Thursday, and marks the band’s first material since MCR announced its return in late 2019 with a one-off show in Los Angeles. As the sprawling track shows, the group — vocalist Gerard Way, guitarist Ray Toro, bassist Mikey Way and guitarist Mike Iero — clearly still has a knack for that signature sound, the song swelling and bursting with Way’s emotive vocals set to urgent alt/punk energies.

After scrapping various global tour dates multiple times due to the pandemic, My Chemical Romance is set to finally start up that run later this year — next week, in fact, with a slew of U.K./European dates before the North American leg kicks off in late August.

As of yet, the group had not officially announced plans for a new album, which would be the first since 2010’s Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, but a new song showing up out of nowhere ought to spark more speculation on that front.
