On Monday, Metallica announced some rather substantial news: The thrash/metal band will be the first band to play the Encore Drive-In Nights series with a special performance taking place on Aug. 29. The event will be displayed across hundreds of drive-in and outdoor theaters across the United States and Canada, and looks to be pretty special. Three Days Grace will also perform for this show.

Per a news release:

The show will be shot specially for the Encore Drive-In Nights Series at a location near the band’s Northern California headquarters and will subsequently be edited and mixed by Metallica’s award winning production team to the highest standards possible.  The concert, the band’s first show in nearly a year, will feature material from throughout their near four decade career and provide Metallica fans with an intimate, unique and truly memorable concert experience.

In these tough times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, any semblance of “normalcy” will be that much more of a relief — so the thought of catching Metallica “live” once again, even in this adapted setting, will be a treat.

For a glimpse into the band’s rehearsals for this gig, here’s a short clip of some practice footage of “Creeping Death,” uploaded recently:

In addition to this news, Metallica will also continue its #MetallicaMondays series of archival streaming concerts tonight, Aug. 10, with a 2004 gig from Munich, a show on the band’s Madly in Anger with the World tour.

It will go up on the Metallica YouTube channel beginning at 8 p.m. EDT/5 p.m. PDT:
