Throughout much of Turn Off The News (Build a Garden), the new album from Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real that was released on Friday, there are sentiments to do exactly that. Turn off the news, go outside, unplug and just experience life. Pick up a copy of the LP at this link.
On “Lotta Fun,” for example, Nelson (Willie’s son), begins with the line “I don’t trust computers anymore/Gonna buy a little weed in the marijuana store,” and that pretty much sums things up.
This is a record about love, life and experiencing it free of the distractions thrown at us nonstop all the time. A supremely blissful thought, for those who are able to attain it, sure, and the songs themselves convey the kind of whimsical, free-spiritedness of their subject matter.
Plus, this band wails on its instruments:
Sheryl Crow, Neil Young and Ke$ha turn up on the album, with the pop singer lending vocal duties on “Save A Little Heartache”:
In all, this is as fleshed-out and eclectic Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real have sounded over the course of their career. The hooks are big, the guitars sweeping, and the overall tone of the album is quite affecting. It ought to do big things for the band.
