Lucy Dacus is preparing to release her awaited new studio album, Home Video, on June 25. The singer/songwriter/member of boygenius alongside Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers has been previewing the record in recent weeks with a handful of tracks.

The latest, “Brando,” was debuted on Tuesday, and finds Dacus telling a tale of relationship issues interspersed with references to classic Hollywood:

You called me cerebral // I didn’t know what you meant // But now I do. Would it have killed you // to call me pretty instead? //I’m in a second story window // and you’re yelling at me “Stella!” // and I’m laughing cause you think you’re Brando but you’ll never come close.”

Said Lucy Dacus of the track:

‘Brando’ refers to a very dramatic friend I had in high school whose whole personality was the media he consumed. He showed me a lot of amazing movies and music, but I think he was more interested in using me as a scrapbook of his own tastes than actually getting to know me. He claimed to know me better than anyone else but I started to feel like all he wanted from me was to be a scene partner in the movie of his life.”

Coincidentally, there is also a music video contest for “Brando” in which fans are encouraged to send in videos of themselves dancing/skateboarding/ice skating etc., with more information at the link in this tweet:

The Home Video album was heavily inspired by Dacus’ life experiences and, per a news release, was built on Dacus’ interrogation of her coming-of-age years in Richmond, Virginia. That self-reflection was made literal in her recent music video for “Hot & Heavy”:

Over the past few years, Lucy Dacus has seen her profile rise with her solo albums and a creative partnership with Baker and Bridgers. Dacus’ new solo album comes with heightened anticipation as a result.

The album track listing:

1. Hot & Heavy
2. Christine
3. First Time
4. VBS
5. Cartwheel
6. Thumbs
7. Going Going Gone
8. Partner In Crime
9. Brando
10. Please Stay
11. Triple Dog Dare
