Today, Los Lobos returned with a new covers album, Native Sons, which is billed as a “love letter to Los Angeles,” the hometown of the legendary rock/Tex-Mex/Latin rock band that has defied genre classification for decades. Just ahead of the release date, the band shared a music video for “Native Son,” which actually first premiered at Dodger Stadium prior to the Dodgers’ game last Friday evening.

Filled with images and locations key to the Los Angeles region, the video definitely carries out the album’s stated goals of honoring the band’s roots:

“Native Son” is the only original song on the record, as Los Lobos devote much of its runtime to paying homage to fellow musical acts from the area, an eclectic mix including Jackson Browne, the Beach Boys, WAR, Buffalo Springfield, The Blasters (which featured Steve Berlin as a member before his joining Los Lobos) and more.

The record starts with a rendition of “Jamaica Say You Will,” the track that opens Jackson Browne’s classic 1972 self-titled record:

The liner notes accompanying Native Sons includes this passage from Los Lobos’ Louie Perez Jr. describing the decision to include the song:

“I used to go over to David’s house after school and listen to records with him, and this song always resonated for me—such a beautiful melody. And the narrative was something I was attracted to. The storytelling. This song in particular inspired me to write from introspection—and I saw that my songs could be personal, but I could still write them to be universal. To this day, that’s been the template.”

Released via New West Records, Native Sons features 13 songs that serve as musical tributes to the region, including salutes to Thee Midniters, The Beach Boys, WAR, Buffalo Springfield, Jackson Browne, and more.
