On Thursday, Lamb of God roared back with a new song titled “Checkmate.”

The heavy metal band‘s first bit of new music in five years, it also marks a new era for the group as it’s the first recording released with new drummer, Art Cruz (Prong, Winds of Plague), who took over for founding drummer Chris Adler within the past year.

Any thoughts of whether Lamb of God, known for absolutely crushing, groove-oriented metal set to the guttural howl of Randy Blythe’s vocals, had lost a step with a few years between new music were definitively quashed by this song, a powerful blast of aggression:

A quote from guitarist Mark Morton summed things up:

“‘Checkmate’ brings together all the components of the LAMB OF GOD sound that we’ve been developing over the last two decades, but with the ambition and ferocity that comes with the start of a new chapter for our band,” says guitarist Mark Morton. “Re-energized and reignited, this is LAMB OF GOD 2020. We’ve never been more excited.”

The song is the first taste of Lamb of God’s new self-titled album, due out May 8 via Epic Records. The album was produced by Josh Wilbur and features guest appearances from Hatebreed’s Jeremy Jasta and Chuck Billy of Testament.

The band also has a slate of European tour dates lined up for the spring, with more presumed to be announced for the United States and North America in the coming weeks.
