This week came with some pretty huge news for the Rolling Stones — and we’re not just talking about their No Filter tour, which announced a new slate of North American stadium gigs for the summer. No, this one’s about guitarist Keith Richards, who said in an interview that he’s finally given up smoking!
As Richards said in a chat with Q104.3 New York’s Jim Kerr (as reported by the NME), the man they call “Keef” claims he hasn’t had a cigarette since last October, adding that he and Mick Jagger realized something on their band’s amazing 2019 tour:
“I think both Mick [Jagger] and I felt that on the last tour we were just getting going,” Richards said.
“[We]’ve got to continue this.”
This bombshell comes after Richards revealed he’s been “fed up” with drinking in 2018.
The image of Keith Richards, whisky swirling and cigarette smoking guitar wizard is hard to shake. It’s one he’s earned after decades of timeless riffs and robust personality as a member of the Rolling Stones, but at his age — 76, the same as workout king Jagger — swearing off both booze and smoking is obviously a smart idea.
It’s probably smart for people of any age, honestly, but it’s especially wise for those who expect to continue touring and being an active musician for as long as their body will allow such activities.
So good on you, Keith!
