John Mayer Embraces the Soft-Rock Energy of His Song “Wild Blue” with a Laid-Back New Video

Released back on July 16, Sob Rock was a new direction for John Mayer, sort of. Groove-oriented, Mayer’s songs veered close to “yacht rock” territory, giving the otherwise melancholy tone of the record a rather easy-listening feel. Sob Rock is the singer/songwriter‘s eighth studio album and was produced by Mayer and the legendary Don Was.

“Wild Blue,” one of the standout songs that features some Dire Straits-ish guitar licks, now has a new video, and its visuals match the song’s aesthetic quite well.

The clip was directed by Mathew Miguel Cullen, co-founder of Mirada Studios (with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro).

The record features a handful of the standalone singles Mayer released in recent months, as most of the recording sessions took place during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 and early ’21. It also includes as others that made their debut on the record — like “Shot in the Dark,” which was given a music video accompanying the album release:
