Fan culture fosters a strong sense of community for enthusiasts of musical acts, so much so that these fans forge friendships beyond the confines of a concert — and Parrotheads, the fan community of Jimmy Buffett, is among one of the biggest around these days.

A recent trip to the Dominican Republic made by a group of Parrotheads, though, did not go as planned, as People reported that 47 of the total 114 fans on the trip together came down with a scary and violent illness while on the vacation together.

A week at Hotel Riu Palace Macao was supposed to be an exotic getaway for these fans, but as a travel agent/ rep from a Parrothead fan association told People, things went south in a big way:

“We were enjoying the beach and the pool, and about 3 or 4 days into the trip we started hearing about people getting sick. They were getting diarrhea, vomiting, dizziness, headaches.”

At least it sounds like the source of the illness was possibly located:

Flowers claims that everyone who grew ill in his group either swam in one specific pool or drank at the swim-up bar. When members of the group sought treatment from the on-site doctor, Flowers claims, ”Most of them got an IV, then were prescribed a medicine for parasites. [They] didn’t do any testing, they just automatically gave them medicine for parasites.”

The hotel furnished a quote to People commenting on the situation:

“We are aware that three guests staying last April at this hotel and coming from the same group … were attended by a possible case of gastroenteritis in our doctor’s office. These events occurred after an external activity of this group outside the hotel, so we can not determine the exact origin of the stomach upset. … No more similar cases were registered by other guests during the indicated date above.”

All this to say … be careful when traveling abroad, music fans! You never know what can happen, as this clearly demonstrates.
