It’s been a rough go lately for Huey Lewis, front man of the iconic band Huey Lewis & the News. His recent battle with hearing loss have significantly affected the band‘s ability to play shows, but they are still planning to release a new album in 2020.
And on Thursday, the band premiered a lively track called “Her Love is Killin’ Me.” Featuring a rhythmic sway and some clever lyrics from Lewis about the addictive effects a particular woman is having on him:
To be honest, this sounds pretty great, given the circumstances under which the band has been dealing over the past couple of years. Lewis maintained that despite his struggles with hearing loss, he hadn’t given any thought to “giving up.”
As he told Scott Ostler of the San Francisco Chronicle about his situation:
Along with his hearing loss, Lewis has had severe tinnitus. The poorer his hearing, the more intense the ringing.
“For the first two months I was like suicidal,” he said. “Really, it can drive you absolutely crazy. After two months of wanting to blow my brains out and not being able to hear anything, I had to figure something out. So creatively, I got involved in our musical.”
Despite this tremendous hardship — really, can you imagine trying to resume a legendary music career without the services of your ears? — Lewis is doing his best to keep his head up and try to forge ahead:
“I haven’t given up,” he says. “I have not given up.”
When released, the new album from Huey Lewis & the News will be the band’s first since Plan B, which came out way back in 2001.
