Today, Nov. 24, is the 29th anniversary of the passing of Freddie Mercury, legendary singer of the band Queen.

The dynamic vocalist (born Farrokh Bulsara) who captivated the world with his unabashed style and flamboyant on-stage persona was an “icon” in the truest sense of the word, and his 1991 passing at just 45 years of age (officially due to bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS) was a tragic loss for the world.

Mercury remains a near-mythical figure today, almost three decades removed from his death. He was largely the focus of Bohemian Rhapsody, the excellent 2018 biopic that earned actor Rami Malek an Academy Award for Actor in a Leading Role, and Queen is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity — the band’s Greatest Hits album entered the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 this week (almost 40 years after its release!).

The band’s songs are arguably as popular as they’ve ever been, and that’s a testament to Queen’s undeniable creativity as a musical force as well as the magnetism provided by Mercury in nearly every facet of his career. Folks were drawn to his performing style and presence, and it went a long way to cementing him as one of the most beloved vocalists of all-time.

All this to say: Freddie Mercury is still missed, very much so, even as Adam Lambert has filled in quite admirably in recent years with Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor.

For the anniversary of Mercury’s passing on Tuesday, May shared a heartfelt post on social media dedicated to his old friend:

Roger Taylor did the same on his Instagram page:

May Freddie Mercury continue to rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to thrive even in his absence.
