Four Year Strong Still as Revved-Up As Ever with New Album ‘Brain Pain’ — Listen

The end of the “oughts,” a.k.a the years between 2007 and 2010, were heady ones for pop-punk. The Vans Warped Tour was still very much a yearly obligation for many bands and punk/rock fans of all ages, and it was in that scene that Massachusetts’ Four Year Strong emerged.
A decade later, the band has released its new album, Brain Pain, the fifth FYS record overall and first since 2015’s self-titled affair. Lest fans be concerned that the band has fallen off a bit in its “old age” — at least in terms of the viability of the “pop punk” scene now compared to when the band unleashed Enemy of the World in 2010 — this record packs quite a punch.
Four Year Strong made its presence felt with passionate, high-energy songs with machine gun riffs, shout-along vocals and thoughtful lyrics, and it’s all here on this record. But so is growth — as the single “Learn to Love the Lie” demonstrates:
Four Year Strong worked with Will Putney, an engineer on Enemy of the World, for this record, and it seems to have been a smart move, as Brain Pain has as many fist-pumping, crowd-pleasing (not to mention catchy) songs on it as you’d want from an FYS record in 2020.
