Today, April 20, is more commonly known as 4/20 — a day held in high regard by marijuana enthusiasts (pun intended). The Foo Fighters chose the day to premiere a new music video for “Chasing Birds,” a particularly tripped-out song on the band’s adventurous new album, Medicine at Midnight.

The animated clip, depicting the band — Dave Grohl, Chris Shiflett, Taylor Hawkins, Pat Smear, Nate Mendel and Rami Jaffee — having some seriously intense sensory experiences in the desert, is the perfect clip to debut on this particular day. Take a look:

That creative animated rendering of the Foos is the result of Bomper Studios, as well as Animation Director Emlyn Davies and Animation Co-Director Josh Hicks.

Medicine at Midnight was released in early February and packs in a few stylistic surprises from the alt/rock vets, including “Chasing Birds,” which ventures a bit into Pink Floyd territory (and the video backs that up even more).

For the most part, Medicine at Midnight follows through on the promise of something new — click here for our full Rock Cellar album review. The record has a few “traditional” Foo Fighters-sounding songs, and some of the stylistic departures retain that FF familiarity, but overall it’s creative and inspired enough to stand out from the previous handful of Foo Fighters records.

Dave Grohl, meanwhile, has a flurry of new releases coming soon, the most recently-detailed being From Cradle to Stage, a six-part Paramount+ series based on his 2017 book with his mother, Virginia, documenting the bonds between rock stars and their moms.
