The Hella Mega tour featuring Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy, originally supposed to take place in 2020 only to have the COVID-19 pandemic force a lengthy delay, recently restarted … but it’s now hit a snag once again.

On Wednesday, a positive COVID test within the Fall Out Boy circle has forced the band to withdraw from upcoming dates in New York City and Boston, though a statement notes that both Weezer and Green Day (plus openers the Interrupters) will still play the shows. Thus far, they’ve been energetic affairs (and even featured a pretty great on-stage moment with a Green Day fan in Atlanta).

The message:

Out of an abundance of caution, Fall Out Boy will not perform at the New York and Boston shows of the Hella Mega Tour due to an individual on the band’s team testing positive for COVID. Green Day, Weezer and the Interrupters will perform as scheduled. It’s important to note that everyone on the entire tour, both band and crew, are fully vaccinated. Each band and their crew have operated in a bubble independently to safeguard everyone as much as possible at each show and in between shows. The tour also has a COVID safety protocol officer on staff full-time that is ensuring everyone is closely following all CDC guidelines.

Needless to say, this is a less than ideal development for the tour, which was first announced in late 2019 before being pushed back due to the pandemic. It also illustrates the delicate nature of the return of live concerts and the logistical nightmares positive COVID cases can create, even when guidelines are followed (as mentioned in the message).

At this point, it’s unclear if any future shows on the Hella Mega Tour will also be affected by this positive test, but here’s hoping there aren’t any more setbacks, because a tour of this size and scope would presumably be difficult to reschedule a second time.

This same situation forced the Foo Fighters to reschedule their planned Los Angeles gig at the Forum on July 17, which came after the band’s triumphant reopening of Madison Square Garden on June 20. Despite being fully vaccinated, a member of the band’s inner circle tested positive, resulting in the show being moved to Aug. 26.
