Watch Evanescence’s Starkly Dramatic New Video for Its Cover of ‘The Chain’ by Fleetwood Mac

Some cover songs seem perfect, due to the particular artist doing the re-imagining. Recently, Evanescence released a cover of the Fleetwood Mac classic “The Chain,” and it’s safe to say vocalist Amy Lee nailed it.

The dramatic, operatic singer who has helmed the band throughout its existence and commercial peak (with 2003’s Fallen, led by breakout single “Bring Me to Life”) is the star of this cover, which is attached to the roll-out of the video game Gears of War 5.

The band premiered an official music video for the song, and it’s just impossibly epic — each band member thrashing about in thick, dense red fog (incorporating the color scheme of Gears of War 5), at one point even literally forming a human chain. Watch it below:

Said Amy Lee of the cover and music video, in a statement:

“The lyrics make me feel the power of standing together against great forces trying to pull us apart, perhaps even from the inside. I really wanted to drive that home in our version,” lead singer Amy Lee elaborates. [Director] P.R. Brown adds, “The goal of the video is to show the bond of this band as they deliver a powerful take on a classic song. The tie in with Gears 5 presented an opportunity to combine the game world together with the band performance in a post-apocalyptic setting. The band emerges from the ashes to come together. We wanted to bring these worlds together and feel both the force of the band and the game.”

Evanescence’s rendition of the song was the soundtrack to a commercial for the video game that was released a few months back:

Evanescence released its fourth studio album, Synthesis, in 2017 — featuring re-worked versions of the band’s earlier material with orchestral and electronic flourishes. Additionally, the band will spend much of the coming months on the road in various parts of Europe:
