Last week, music legends Eric Clapton and Van Morrison elicited strong reactions around the internet by announcing a new single, “Stand and Deliver,” a continuation of Van Morrison‘s recent string of aggressive anti-lockdown songs aimed at the U.K. government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic (even as coronavirus cases in the Untied States and aboard continue surging at alarming rates).

Today, Dec. 4, that song arrives, and … well, lyrically it delivers on its promise. Performed by Clapton, the song doesn’t hold back whatsoever:

Do you want to be a free man/Do you want to be a slave?
Is this a sovereign nation/Or just a fascist state?
You better look out people, before it gets too late

And so on.

A quote from Clapton on his involvement with this project and Van Morrison’s perspective, which he obviously supports:

“There are many of us who support Van and his endeavors to save live music; he is an inspiration,” Eric Clapton said (via Variety). “We must stand up and be counted because we need to find a way out of this mess. The alternative is not worth thinking about. Live music might never recover.”

Process from the “Stand and Deliver” track will benefit Van Morrison’s Lockdown Financial Hardship Fund, which sprang up with his recent releases as a means of providing support to musicians impacted negatively by the pandemic and subsequent restrictions.

A quote from Van Morrison regarding this new song:

“Eric’s recording is fantastic and will clearly resonate with the many who share our frustrations. It is heart-breaking to see so many talented musicians lack any meaningful support from the government, but we want to reassure them that we are working hard every day to lobby for the return of live music, and to save our industry.”

As for Van Morrison’s previous anti-lockdown songs, here’s “No More Lockdown”:

“As I Walked Out”:

And “Born to Be Free”:

Comments

  • Craig Jacobson says:

Some idiots are just more talented than others.

  • David Nelson says:

I totally agree. I am a fan of their music, but this is just brain dead. I expected more from Clapton; not so much Morrison. Yes. Lockdown hurts live music and musicians. Yes, venues and musicians will be in bad straits. No. This is not permanent. Looking at the number of folks who have died or had their health permanently affected by COVID is even more tragic.

  • Doug Maple says:

This is so disappointing. One of the major pillars of any recovering community is to stay out of politics. Having your own say, all those things, are ok if kept to yourself. Clapton has no business doing something like this. The song totally sucks as well.

  • James says:

“Do you want to be a free man, or do you want to be slave?” – that is the question. Government overreach is out of control, and it will continue to get worse until people and lesser magistrates push back against it. Mask mandates and lockdowns are unconstitutional and ought to be ignored. Glad more and more people are speaking out against arbitrary government.

Just gained a lot more respect for Clapton and Morrison.

  • Will Canter says:

So disappointed. Thought you where a much bigger image then this trump lovin shit

  • Pax says:

Way too many drugs. They think that endangering their fans and community is worth their personal economy, nothing could be for selfish. #OldGuysYouThoughtWereCoolAreJustAholes.

  • UG Network News Service says:

    At last. BRAVO

Someone in the celebrity world who is not pandering to China and main stream media. Finally someone with the brass to stand up for the little guy, for the ones being hurt worse. Finally someone who speaks their mind, and are unafraid of the what the ultra left are bringing down on the world!

. . . It’s not for the benefit of you and me,
. . . because we were born to be free

BRAVO, Van and Eric! I’m working up the songs for our band as we speak! We’ll take a thousand copies!

  • John M. says:

When a pandemic effects all of us we need to error on the side of safety. This will pass. The vaccine is on the way. For now, if my mask and your mask helps keep someone safe until the vaccine arrives I will take saving a life over a personal freedom. I will continue to enjoy both Van’s and Eric’s gift of expression in music but on this issue of life and death, I am in strong disagreement. I have seen in the U.S. to many lives lost because of a President who failed to take precautions and set an example but had access to up to date medications to fight the virus. Meanwhile others less fortunate in treatment lost their lives or loved ones. The music industry and many other industries have been hit hard. Artists who have been blessed by their gifts could look more productively to ways to reach out to struggling artists financially and looking for constructive ways to slowly and safely bring back live music again.

  • Wake up. says:

Amazing how the song’s ALREADY been censored.

  • Alba says:

The Nazis and Stalinists convinced the people it was for their own good. Medical opinion, media and data has been censored and there is no proper debate. Lockdown is causing more deaths from suicide, cancer, heart disease and poverty than any virus. Deaths from flu and covid are fewer than 2018 and we didn’t Lockdown then. Step back from the government Applied Psychology and think for yourself. Thank God for Van Morrison.

  • Chris says:

It is great that they made a song to fight back against the almost unending violation of rights America and England are going to us. Glad to see that they have the courage to stand up for what they think is right even if it is not the popular opinion. I am tired of artists like Bon Jovi who just support the government propaganda. These men are true heroes. They are true rock stars.

  • Chris Herrmann says:

I have worshiped Eric Clapton my entire life. I watched several live shows of him here in Germany and once in Brazil. But I confess that now I was disappointed. It is not fascism to protect lives and avoid crowds when hundreds and thousands of people are dying. Not only are musicians experiencing difficulties. Everyone is experiencing a dramatic moment. It is necessary to have a sense of humanity and solidarity with the lives of all of us. Lockdown is an important emergency measure to protect the lives of all of us and it will not be forever. We have to stop looking at our own navel at that moment!

  • David Krest says:

    Thank you James

  • Marvin Rains says:

    Amen amen amen
    Love ya Van
    Love ya Eric

  • Chris Herrmann says:

  • Eric Shaffer says:

Something needs to happen now!!! I can’t bear the the thought of not being able to go experience a show with E.C. or Dead and Company. I have always believed that music brings everyone together. Example every year on new year’s eve in New York city 10 minutes before the ball drops thousands of people start singing John Lennon’s Imagine. All different religions, races and beliefs of people but they all sing together as one. This year since John’s death 40 years ago it will not happen. CAN YOU IMAGINE THERE’S NO MORE MUSIC !! INSTEAD OF TELLING EVERYONE TO WEAR A MASK TELL THE GOVERNMENT DEMAND TO SPEND THE MONEY TO MAKE THE VACCINE TO END OF THIS!!!

  • Tim Morrison says:

    I love Van Morrison’s Music.
On the Covid-19 tip he’s a complete fucking idiot

  • Tim Morrison says:

Constitution is immaterial when it comes to human life or death crisis.
Masks and Lockdown have completely correlated with increased Covid deaths when ignored.
Governance mandate is Saving lives first Einstein

  • Fernando Borges says:

I tend to agree with others that say that some idiots are more talented than others. I hope they stick to music and leave politics for politicians. I want live music to but I need to be alive to hear it.

  • Wake Up says:

As the lockdowns and mask mandates continue it becomes more and more obvious which citizens can well afford to just stay home and cash taxpayer funded checks and which citizens have to actually work to provide for themselves and others.
This can’t last for much longer for obvious reasons.
It is past the time to stop pretending that this ‘pandemic’ warranted such an extreme response and to start acknowledging the fact that it is an aggressively imposed societal ‘reset’.
Staying home and chasing checks is obviously not sustainable so the citizens best start thinking about what the next phase of the ‘global reset’ will bring…
Hint – mass starvation, civil wars, genocide are a proven method of reducing the population so the elitists can have the planet to themselves.

  • Timothy Ammon says:

Those who die because your your and their ignorance will not be attending and “live” shows. You poor pitiful fools.

  • Gino P. says:

Great songs. Well done to the musicians here. Thank you. The words are just right. Government are evil people, proper wolves in sheep clothing.
I can’t understand the idiotic comments left here by some people who obviously can’t see the simplest of lies.

  • Denis Nobert says:

I really enjoy Morrison and Clapton’s music. They are great artists, I respect that they are trying to help struggling musicians, but their message is wrong. Raise funds in whatever capacity you can Van, but not by excluding everyone else who’s suffering from the effects of the Pandemic. The measures are there to resolve this quickly, your way will only prolong it.

  • Neil Stone says:

I’m with people like Dave Nelson on this. I’m speaking as a Care worker and a musician…
Sorry, Van and Eric: I love your music and respect your right to express a point of view. But never mind Live music for the moment…try working in the care sector for awhile and stop bellyaching about ‘ the rights of the individual’. Social responsibility is not slavery

  • Jeil says:

Agree with you Van Morrison, Eric Clapton and you, 100%!!!

  • RIk says:

I knew this would suck those 2 are decades past their sell by date

  • Kitamigo says:

A bit short sighted and “easy”. Nobody has set out to deliberately make anybodys life unnecessarily harder. The outcry if the government had done less would have been equally vitriolic. At the end of the day this will be over in due course and the recovery will continue to take toll, make no mistake. Special pleading is not helpful.

  • Linda Combs says:

What a greedy self centered asshole Clapton is. Who knew? He was one of the things that brought pure joy to me. He is now dead to me. Shame on you EC

  • Alan J Hamilton says:

James is absolutely correct. Some people wish to see the back of 2020 but wait till you see what’s in store for us in 2021! Look what those in authority caused us to comply with already this year!
Wishing continued inspiration and success to Van Morrison & Eric Clapton.

  • Herbert Rob says:

It’s us against a virus, not us against the government. And maybe these braindead musicians should take a course in history to find out what fascism is all about. So many have died from Covid and these idiots don’t seem to care or even understand.

  • SteveT says:

I have loved these guys and their music for years, and they have every right to express themselves in song again. But I strongly disagree with this position, and I am disappointed they are actively working to put people at risk. It doesn’t come off like freedom advocacy, just selfishness.
Hey Van & Eric – 5 musicians on a big stage for an hour have a lot more opportunity to socially distance than hundreds or thousands of fans crammed into a concert hall for 5 hours.

  • Herbert says:

It’s not about us against the government, it’s us against a virus. And maybe these braindead musicians should take a small course in history to find out what fascism is all about. So many people have died from Covid and these idiots don’t seem to care or even understand.

  • Charley says:

Before music was all sold by lawyers, there were musicians who told the stories of government wrongs and oppression. Thank you Van and Eric. Covid may be real and serious but power hungry politicians will never let a crisis go to waste.

  • Joe says:

James if you listen to idiots like Clapton and Morrison you will be free, free from life. Covid can kill you

  • Propaganda Free says:

Some of you people are so dumb it’s tragic, that’s why the government is doing this because they know so many are completely clueless like the posters above who can’t think or do anything for themselves so they want big brother to be in complete control of their lives. I appreciate Clapton and Morrison not only standing up to this global tyranny but also for telling it like it is to the snowflakes and mindless masses of uninformed take the government at it’s word imbeciles! Research PCR tests would it change minds if people knew this whole pandemic is based on lies?

  • Jim Blyth says:

George Ivan Morrison is to be commended. I admire his bluster . Petty politicians in tandem with so called health care ‘ experts ‘ have colluded with mainstream media in a successful effort called Project Fear. The so called recovery will be on the backs of the unemployed and the working poor . Disgusting . We are not all in this together folks . The Big Boys Club will have the best Christmas ever.

  • Peter Cross says:

    Me too.

  • Menz says:

    GO VAN ERIC
If your against them your against FREEDOM

  • Menz says:

    GO VAN ERIC
Take the blinders off stop watching fake news. Your against Van your against FREEDOM

  • Bert says:

What happened to the rebellious ones ? all very quiet as they either hunker down or actively back the narrative that governments spew out.
Muffled sheep as our rights & liberties are stolen from us .
Credit to Morrison & Clapton for at least challenging the lockdown
Expect they will get dogs abuse from the agents of dystopia.

  • Wade Rivers says:

We went from loving freedom to embracing slavery. Morrison and Clapton haven’t changed their voice, the media has. Lennon would be right there with them. And Harrison, Hendrix, Jim Morrison…

  • Tiredofit says:

Thank you Van and Eric. If you want to stay locked up in your house, go for it. As for the rest of us, we want to be free!

  • Jim Marshall says:

If you think this is about a virus. You don’t think much, do you?

  • bill thibault says:

Here in the states, it’s been a war against one man, President Trump. Whatever he did, or didn’t do, it was always WRONG! You get beyond that BS, and you understand that the entire ‘scientific community’ was in the midst of contradictions! Rumors were flying all over the place! It came from China and they chose NOT to tell us the truth about it! So, yes, Van and Eric have a valid point: this is being used as a weapon politically and it is destroying American/European small business! The disease itself is an enigma: some are susceptible and spend weeks in the hospital or die, while others experience mild symptoms and after a 2-week quarantine, perfectly fine. The Most Common, and the most likely scenarios are the truth about this disease! However, politicians, who are not doctors have to do something, and this is what THEY choose to do! BTW, Hospitals get thousands of dollars more if the diagnosis is COVID! Consider that FACT as well!

  • Vincent Pichay says:

I totally agree! This is not about the virus anymore but to control human being. I grow up with these artist and we came up with love peace and music remember? You have to wonder the new generations where they come from…

  • Robin says:

I find it strange that these musicians (FYI, I’m a huge Clapton fan, just want to make that clear ) would want to make a song about covid , telling people not to wear masks , etc in a pandemic. Sure, you’ve got access to all the best medical care that most other people don’t. As far as these musicians being hurt by a pandemic , think about all the people that have “normal” jobs trying to make ends meet. Most musicians make millions if they have a recording contract. If they are low on funds, sorry , you’re not living within your means. Overspending & continual buying, & were supposed to feel sorry for you?? Sell a boat, or one of your extra vacation homes! Meanwhile, others have died from this pandemic & you people want to act like this is all a joke? Would you still feel this way if you had a family member die or was on a ventilator ? Telling others to not do social distancing or wear masks is just being careless & irresponsible. This will be one cd I will never buy, & I hope others feel the same way.

  • MarkB says:

Most people get it ; this is a worldwide crisis, on a scale never before encountered. But some petty people think they have a right to endanger others so they can do as they please.

Morrison, sit the hell down and shut the hell up. Clapton, you too. Fame doesn’t entitle you.

  • George M Osborne says:

So, would you make the same comment to Hollywood? and maybe SNL?

  • Fritz Groszkruger says:

The science of mask wearing is flawed. Areas where social distancing has been strictly practiced are no less sick. The unthinking following of government orders is sad for us who know history. Think Reichtag fire.
    Just another “crisis” here.
At this point the death rate from Covid “related” illness is .08%. (That’s 8 hundredths of 1 %.
    Who are the idiots?

  • J-Jam says:

The song was quietly pulled almost as quickly as it was released. Most likely due to the backlash around it. No matter where you stand on how we should handle the pandemic, this is highly unfortunate. Even if you completely disagree with the message of this song, Clapton and Morrison still have a right to voice their opinions. And you as a independent-thinking individual have the right not to listen to it if you reject the message.

  • Alex Ramos says:

What a bunch of idiotic comments here. Governments and media certainly have done a great work while brainwashing most of the population. You’re all acting like well behaved retarded children in a kindergarten classroom… certainly you all deserve to become slaves to the NWO.

  • Richy Phanterros says:

    Hi,
I have always been a fan of EC & VM & have seen them many times live. It seems some people would see a conspiracy in the sun rising every day. Are we to believe all the medical experts and all the governments in the world got together to kill live music with a fake pandemic? Motive?
Just look at the USA – where the “freedom” not to socially distance & not wear masks is being widely practiced- the result is widespread illness & death.
The precautions in society to reduce the virus are coming from the people themselves, co-ordinated by the Government. Real frontline workers see the illness, and this is relayed within their community. We don’t all rely on mass media for our information. I am tired of septuagenarians, elected or otherwise, telling me I have nothing to worry about, and carry on as normal, just so they can continue to earn money, while they enjoy (as they have for decades) a luxurious and wealthy lifestyle, lockdown or not.
“Ignore the rules for your own safety, be free! “ cries Van. Right so Ivan, when all this is over, I am sure you will come to my aid, when I try to enter your concert venue with a ash Hurley and a glass bottle of bourbon by the neck, so that I can be truly free.

  • d bone says:

Study the real #’s, don’t blank quantify. These men are heroes. Have been and are, and always will be to me. When do you hate a musicians music since you have a differing opinion???. Music is music! Live and love it!
You pussies are a different era. Sucking the cock of your governments. I LIVE and LOVE FLORIDA! Wide open and free. Thank you Mr Governor! (FYI-We have awesome hospital #’s) No problem.
You can’t understand a shut down unless its your music hall or restaurant etc. YOU ARE BLIND and FAITHLESS!
    Love to ya GENTS!

  • Franco says:

Taking measures to avoid the virus doens’t mean being slaves. What an idiot! Very disapoint to me, as a guitar player, see Clapton embrace such a stupid cause.

  • Mark Corbluth says:

The governments have done a great job of frightening the sheep. Yes the virus is dangerous to the very elderly or those with certain conditions and yes we should protect them. Not put them in old peoples homes to infect each other as was done early in this farce. But to take away most basic human rights is criminal and a tyranny. 10 times more will die directly from lockdowns than from thevirus. Get real. Wake up! Good on Van the Man and Eric Clapton.

  • Stevo says:

The countries that are doing well thru Covid are the ones that have lockdowned swiftly, have followed the health warnings about this insidious disease and locked their borders to halt transmission from countries that haven’t locked down. Van, Eric….get the facts and stop this idiotic nonsense music……it flies in the face of sane thinking and worse still you are contributing to a health crisis. The longer you promote this attitude the longer Covid will be with us.

  • John says:

    Well done Van and Eric
I wholeheartedly support your free right to opinion and speech
People, seriously, deep down, so much doesn’t add up or make sense with this response and fear.
Support people who have the guts to stand up and voice an opinion in the face of opposition.
The hero’s are the ones who stand up.

  • Mark says:

Right guys, go sing your songs at the graves of John Prine, Ellis Marsalis, Charlie Pride and all the other musicians who have died from COVID 19 (not to mention the thousands of frontline healthcare workers, poor minorities etc. who have died this year). Then come tell us how you feel. You don’t get to tell me wether I’m “free” or not. I sincerely hope that neither of you contract this disease because despite your .01% wealth status you’re both of an age that would be quite bad to go through it.
BTW – the music is vintage but the lyrics are pathetically adolescent.
