David Byrne’s ‘American Utopia’ Broadway Show Extends Run with New Dates in 2021

Anybody who witnessed the live concert experience that David Byrne put together in 2018 knows how magical an evening it was.

Far from your typical “concert,” Byrne‘s innovative, highly choreographed and impossibly creative live presentation, which touched on his material with Talking Heads, works from his own solo career and more, inspired a Broadway musical that’s also earning rave reviews.

And it’s been doing so well, in fact, that the Broadway run has been extended, after news over the weekend.

“It’s become obvious to us in the band, the crew and the producer team that audiences want, dare I say need? To see this show,” said David Byrne in a statement. “They’re not ready to have it disappear just yet. We feel the same way, we love doing this show. So, it’s thrilling to us that we can announce that we’ll be back in September.”

The second run will start in September, spanning 17 weeks until it wraps on January 17, 2021. This news comes after it was revealed that Spike Lee will direct a cinematic adaptation of American Utopia, so these are busy times for Byrne, indeed.

Oh yeah — he’ll also appear on Saturday Night Live as the musical guest opposite host John Mulaney on Feb. 29, as well.
