In news that couldn’t come at a better time for the thousands of independent music venues and theaters forced to shutter for much of 2020, the new bipartisan coronavirus relief package allocates $15 billion of federal aid for these live music venues, incorporating the #SaveOurStages Act into its plan.

Recent months have seen significant attention given to #SaveOurStages, a campaign launched by NIVA, the National Independent Venue Association, which formed in early May in an effort to secure adequate federal funding that would ensure the venues were able to remain open once the COVID-19 pandemic passes.

News of its inclusion in the new relief package prompted a statement from NIVA, shared Sunday evening:

This can be attributed to Dayna Frank, Owner & CEO, First Avenue Productions and Board President of NIVA.

“We’re thrilled that Congress has heard the call of shuttered independent venues across the country and provided us a crucial lifeline by including the Save Our Stages Act in the COVID-19 Relief Bill. We’re also incredibly grateful that this bill provides Pandemic Unemployment Assistance which will help the millions of people who lost their jobs through no fault of their own during this economic crisis. We urge swift passage of this legislation, which will assist those in the greatest need and ensure the music lives on for generations to come.”

Among the industries hit hardest by the pandemic, the music and live entertainment scene has been uprooted as a result of restrictions put in place for public health reasons. Venues have had to shut their doors with little promise, if any, of economic support — prompting A-list musical acts to come together in October for #SOSFest, a virtual fundraising live stream that saw acts including the Foo Fighters, Miley Cyrus, Dave Matthews, Brittany Howard and many more playing live sets from iconic venues across the United States.

Stay tuned for any more official word about #SaveOurStages, its inclusion in upcoming relief packages and anything else related to this issue.
