After a 2020 that came with delays and cancellations — and the various headaches associated with refunds and those who had already purchased tickets — organizers of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival have reportedly decided to move its planned event from October 2021 to April 2022.

This news came through via Variety on Wednesday, which attributed the change of plan to “two industry sources with knowledge of the situation,” and also stipulates that this decision is expected to include Goldenvoice’s sister country festival, Stagecoach.

As the state of the COVID-19 pandemic affected decisions in 2020, Coachella was first moved from April 2020 to October, then again to April 2021, before a 2021 event was officially nixed (though promoters had hoped for an October 2021 edition).

This decision by Goldenvoice to push Coachella to 2022 comes as some music festivals have begun rolling out plans for events later in 2021, albeit modified in light of the state of the pandemic, which is still preventing big public gatherings on a large scale. San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, for example, rolled out a plan of its own to shift from Summer 2021 to Halloween weekend, with stipulations regarding guest safety on display with the announcement.

Other festivals in other states have also begun their own plans, but Variety quotes a source as summing up what makes such decisions tougher for Coachella, which draws 100,000+ to the polo fields of Indio, Calif. each weekend:

“There’s a big difference between having two weekend of Coachella in California and throwing a country festival in Florida,” the source said.
