More than three decades in the making, Whitford/St. Holmes have released a new record titled, simply, Reunion. Coming after their self-titled 1981 debut, the album should appeal to anyone even remotely interested in their early record. For his latest entry in our Turn Me On category, KCSN 88.5 FM’s Jim Nelson profiles the Record Company… Three seconds. That’s about all it took. The unrelenting, circular bass line that sends The Record Company’s Off the Ground into a sick, deep groove, got me in about three seconds. It could have been the slide that bassist Alex Stiff employs to stylistically connect his nine repeating notes, or perhaps it was the whole of that indefatigable circular riff that got me, but even before drummer Marc Cazorla and singer/guitarist Chris Vos join in I was hopelessly hooked. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8aNK3XMP5w Vos…

Beck is back. Below, stream the eclectic musician/songwriter’s new song, the appropriately titled Wow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZlbahhoEIo It’s Beck’s second standalone single in the past year, coming after the infectious Dreams made its debut in 2015. Judging by these two songs, Beck’s new album — slated for release on October 21 via Capitol Records — will be a stylistic switch from the stripped-down approach of 2014’s Grammy-winning Morning Phase. Stay tuned…

On Tuesday night, the new rap/rock supergroup featuring Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford, Public Enemy MC Chuck D. and B-Real of Cypress Hill made their debut with a high-energy gig at the Whisky-A Go Go in Hollywood. The show, announced at the last minute, seems to have been quite a party. The supergroup slammed through hits from Rage Against the Machine’s catalog, as well as notable tracks from Public Enemy, Cypress Hill and more — including two original songs. Naturally, considering the individuals involved, everything about this project is politically charged. Their surprise announcement…

Don’t want to be dead to life, don’t want to be dulled to extinction. That’s one of the lines in Garbage’s new single Even Though Our Love is Doomed, which the band premiered late last week. It’s from their upcoming album, Strange Little Birds, which is due out June 10. The band premiered a lyric video for the song, and it features visuals that mirror the track’s solemn tones and singer Shirley Manson’s typically haunting vocals. It all works very well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lpcdAR9ij0 It’s the second preview of the album released thus far by the long-running alt/rock band, coming after their colorful…

After a lengthy hiatus, So*Cal alt/rockers Thrice returned last week with a new album titled To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere. A charged, layered collection of songs that serves as a solid follow-up to 2011’s Major/Minor, TBEITBN finds the band at its absolute best. As drummer Riley Breckenridge explained to us in a Q&A a few months back, the band worked on the new material for some time, throughout the West Coast. What resulted is a resilient collection of songs blending styles from throughout the band’s versatile career – which began with hard-rock/metal undertones and has since progressed into…

Trendy Towne, Southern California Sick and tired of everyone telling him his writing “sounds like an Onion article,” humor writer Dixon B. Tweenerlegs committed suicide yesterday by intentionally fighting a gorilla, which, ironically, was the exact subject of an Onion parody piece in October of 2009. Sheriff’s department spokesman Steve Hannah said Tweenerlegs’ mangled, feeble writer’s-body was found torn in two – the top half inside a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Studio City, the bottom half draped over a table outside a Starbucks in West Hollywood – two places Tweenerlegs frequented.  “You don’t often see suicidal writer’s body parts…

The Who at Staples Center; Los Angeles When Pete Townshend said the din of his amplifiers in 1964 was emulating that of a WWII bomber plane, he wasn’t kidding. Anyone can play the guitar like a buzz saw. Not everyone can shower you in shrapnel or cause puncture wounds with the sound of searing steel. It’s 2013. Townshend is nearly 68 years old. But this was his original manifesto: to reflect in music and words the new-found freedoms and challenges of post-war England; to reflect back at The Who’s followers their own struggles and desires. 1973’s Quadrophenia may have been written specific…

On Tuesday night, one of those special “Hollywood events” took place at the Roxy Theatre. Celebrating the release of the soundtrack to Judd Apatow’s new film This is 40 were Graham Parker & the Rumour, Lindsey Buckingham and Ryan Adams. Apatow and This is 40 star Paul Rudd were both in the building, but the night was more of a showcase for the soundtrack’s very talented musicians. Buckingham and Adams both performed short solo sets before Parker & the Rumour played a career-spanning set to a room of longtime fans and industry folk. Adams and Buckingham were stellar. Adams’ short three-song set included tender…
