In 1996, Rachael Sage did something totally wacky. Things were beginning to change in the music industry, but no one knew yet just how much of a systemic seismic shift was coming, and it was then that Sage started her own New York City record company, MPress Records. As its premier offering, she issued her own debut, Morbid Romantic. It was a time when female singer/songwriters were the “in” thing: Melissa Etheridge, Ani DiFranco, Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos, Indigo Girls, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, and Natalie Merchant held court. Into that fray dove Sage, and here she is 20…

Back on July 7, 1996 – so today’s date, 20 years ago – the ABC show Muppets Tonight aired something that just begged for a share this week. (Thanks to the AV Club for bringing this to our attention!). In the clip, Kermit the Frog does his best David Byrne impression in a brilliantly-crafted video tribute to the Talking Heads’ classic Once in a Lifetime: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jbya4kxC6E As seen, the Muppets send-up was a strong homage to the Heads’ live concert film Stop Making Sense: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shzbz_b0SzE Though the song itself did have its own music video, that was also worthy of…

Guns N’ Roses’ anticipated tour is in full swing, but while the trek reunited Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan, it did not include original drummer Steven Adler — until Wednesday night’s gig in Cincinnati. https://twitter.com/gunsnroses/status/750893899867000832 The drummer showed up to lend a hand as a special guest for two songs, Out Ta Get Me and My Michelle. World class drummer Ginger Baker, an integral part, along with Eric Clapton and the late Jack Bruce, of blues/rock band Cream, recently underwent major heart surgery. His daughter, Leda, told the Daily Mirror that her 76-year-old father is “on the road to recovery” after a series of medical setbacks. A few weeks back, a message pertaining to his heart condition was posted on Baker’s official blog by Leda: After open heart surgery and a bad fall Ginger is miraculously recovering very well. He called the day after his surgery to say he was OK. Albeit a rather disoriented and unintelligible conversation he was…

After months of anticipation, Blink-182’s new album California hits stores today. The LP may be without one-third of the band’s core lineup, as guitarist/vocalist Tom DeLonge is sitting this one out, the music is (mostly) as familiar as ever for fans of the longtime Southern California punk/pop/rock band. Drummer Travis Barker and bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus teamed up with Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio for this new-look version of the band, and the music they created with the aid of producer John Feldmann isn’t too far from what people have come to expect from a Blink record. Due to DeLonge’s absence,…

KCSN 88.5 FM’s Jim Nelson is back, with another installment of his Turn Me On column … showcasing singer/songwriter Cory Sipper. ——————————— If the only requisite for scoring hit after hit was to simply write and record a slew of smart, hopelessly hooky songs, then there’d be no need to turn you on to Santa Barbara, California, native Cory Sipper here—you’d have known about her long ago. Sipper released a trio of albums before the turn of the century, beginning with 1995’s Swimology (which featured Nervous, a Top-10 hit in Japan) and there was a near-miss with a CD she…
