Radiohead’s new record, A Moon Shaped Pool, is a pretty stunning listen from start to finish — and the Numbers is easily one of the standout tracks, at least by our estimation. From its hushed arrangement to chord progression and overall thematic feel, the song is a highlight on a masterwork of an album. That’s why the band’s new music video for the song, directed once again by Paul Thomas Anderson, is so perfect. In it, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood sit on adjacent benches in a relaxing outdoor setting, performing the song on two guitars (and with the assistance…

As I sit here listening to and writing about this intriguing new band from Long Island, New York, The Lemon Twigs, I’m not really sure how to describe what I hear. Others in my position have used words like pop/rock, soft rock, baroque rock, melodic, harmony-rich, underground cool, theatrical, lo-fi, lush, modern-day, retro-leaning, divine, startlingly sophisticated, ornate and complex, and they’ve referenced The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Kinks, and The 5th Dimension. When he first heard The Lemon Twigs, NPR’s Bob Boilen felt like he was listening to “music from a time that never was.” To all those…

On Tuesday, the Rolling Stones put up a mysterious and oh-so-cryptic video on their social channels and website alluding to some new music coming out soon — maybe this Thursday, October 6?? https://twitter.com/RollingStones/status/783278630252183552 The teasing continued on the band’s Twitter page: https://twitter.com/RollingStones/status/782551077606555648 https://twitter.com/RollingStones/status/782913250627350529 What could this all mean? Well, it’s expected that the Stones will be releasing a blue record soon, a collection of covers they recorded in a few days (as hinted by Ronnie Wood a while back). Is this what they’re teasing, and so close to the Desert Trip festival in Indio, California?…

After months of rumors, speculation and online buzz, the curtain was lifted on who will be performing at the Super Bowl LI Halftime Show in February 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas: https://twitter.com/ladygaga/status/781644781327966208 Lady Gaga made the announcement herself on Thursday night, meaning that the singer will take the stage after last year’s Coldplay/Bruno Mars/mash-up performance entertained a global audience at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. One has to wonder if Gaga, who just released a new album, will pepper in some musical tributes to Prince and/or David Bowie, both of whom passed away in 2016. However, February…

Singer/songwriter Regina Spektor is something of a singular talent in an overcrowded music landscape. Ever since catching on in a big way with 2004’s Soviet Kitsch, Spektor has reached new heights creatively, and that creative streak continues with her marvelous new album, Remember Us to Life. Released today, the album — the long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s What We Saw from the Cheap Seats — buoys and sways with varying structures, styles, Spektor’s trademark lyrical skills and a colorful warmth and elegance that is simply in its own realm. After premiering some tracks from the album over the past few weeks,…

The internet has been buzzing lately thanks to a recent conversation Eagles legend Don Henley had with the Montreal Gazette about his solo album Cass County. In it, Henley offered up some indications of what it’d take to reunite the band, a prospect that seemed out of the question after Glenn Frey passed away back in January. Said Henley: “You know, Glenn has a son who can sing and play quite well. And one of the only things that would make sense to me is if it were his son.” And if that were to happen, Henley added, it could break down other…
