This month, KCSN 88.5’s Jim Nelson spotlights Catfish and the Bottlemen for our Turn Me On category… Somewhere in Sydney, Australia, there’s a busker who directly impacted the name of a rock band from a small Welsh seaside resort town. Years after the fact. This busker from Down Under, dubbed Catfish the Bottleman for the liquid-filled bottles that he used as an instrument, was pretty much the first musical memory of a very young Ryan Evan “Van” McCann, whose family had briefly traveled to Australia. Back home in Llandudno, Wales, in 2007, a teenage McCann started playing guitar with Billy…

On Sunday, August 7, innovative songwriter/musician Sufjan Stevens will headline the Hollywood Bowl alongside Kurt Vile and the Violators and Ibeyi. Stevens’ one-off gig comes a day after he will take the stage at the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco (and his set is right before Radiohead’s main stage slot, too). For anyone who hasn’t seen Stevens live, he’s an engagingly unpredictable live performer. He turned in two eclectic sets at Coachella back in April and a similar set at the Pitchfork Music Festival in mid-July, here’s an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qor9c3as2vQ At the Bowl, Stevens will no…

2016 marks the tenth anniversary of Seal Beach, California-based band Rx Bandits’ 2006 album …And the Battle Begun, so it’s time for a special tour. On Tuesday, the band announced plans for a fall tour that will find them performing the record in its entirety each night. And So I Watch You From Afar will open. For anyone unaware, Rx Bandits emerged in the early 2000s as primarily a ska band on Drive-Thru Records, but evolved over the years into a fiercely original band with unrivaled live shows. After taking a break for a few years, they returned with 2014’s Gemini,…

Would you believe Korn is preparing to release its 12th studio album? On October 21, the long-running hard rock/metal band will do just that, when The Serenity of Suffering is unleashed via Roadrunner Records. The band previewed the LP recently with a music video for the pummeling track Rotting in Vain, which should appeal to longtime fans of the Bakersfield group, which has done some definite experimentation over the years. The clip stars Sons of Anarchy’s Tommy Flanagan as well as the musicians themselves, take a look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq9j1qkj2Vc Korn’s most recent album, 2013’s The Paradigm Shift, was the first since…

To attend a ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic concert is to immerse yourself in pop culture-themed musical bliss for an hour and a half. This past weekend, the legendary musician/parody artist and his impossibly capable backing band headlined the Hollywood Bowl for two nights of career-spanning magic, backed by the Philharmonic Orchestra to boot. This was a special, can’t-miss experience concert added to Al’s Mandatory Fun World Tour, and it didn’t disappoint. (All photos via Florian Buechting/Facebook) Getting ready for my show at the Hollywood Bowl. No pressure. Third Eye Blind made waves last week with an emotionally charged appearance at a fundraising event near the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. Singer Stephan Jenkins aired out some of his grievances against the GOP and current social issues, and on Monday the band followed that up with a new song along the same vein. Titled Cop Vs. Phone Girl, the mostly acoustic tune concerns issues in the news a lot lately: claims of police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Lyrically, Jenkins says the song was specifically inspired by a 2015 incident at Spring Valley High in South…

Oasis’ 1997 album Be Here Now was a big, some say bloated album that followed the band’s mega-hit 1995 record (What’s the Story?) Morning Glory. By this time, the brothers Gallagher — Noel and Liam — were two of the biggest rock stars on the planet, and the music on Be Here Now was elaborate, indulgent, and fitting for a highly anticipated record from one of the most ‘important’ bands of the era. While persistent rumors have circulated (and been denied) regarding the chance of an actual reunion, this week Oasis announced Chasing The Sun: 1993-1997 Edition, a big reissue celebrating…

This weekend, “Weird Al” Yankovic will take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl for two very special concerts with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Ahead of those festivities, Yankovic paid a visit to San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, stopping by Conan’s set during the convention. https://twitter.com/alyankovic/status/756256427685982208 There, Al and his band performed the song Foil, his parody of Lorde’s Royals that was a key parody track on 2014’s Mandatory Fun album. Watch the performance below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgnHgQHW8gs In addition to the music, Yankovic chatted for a few minutes with Conan about his concerts, which include more than a few elaborate costume changes, all…

Whenever a popular song is played over the speakers at a political event, it lends itself to the possibility of the artist speaking out against said use – which is exactly what happened with George Harrison’s estate on Thursday night, just a few days after Third Eye Blind made headlines at a nearby benefit gig. With the RNC taking place in Cleveland and Donald Trump officially accepting the party’s presidential nomination, Here Comes the Sun was heard at the arena at one point during the evening. This prompted the following tweet from Harrison’s Twitter account: https://twitter.com/GeorgeHarrison/status/756329307325235202 After all, George was…

The 2016 Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival is coming up fast. It’ll take place at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco from August 5 through August 7, and on Thursday the fest revealed its daily lineup. Headlined this year by LCD Soundsystem, Radiohead and Lionel Richie, OSL looks to be another wonderful weekend in the Bay Area this time around. https://twitter.com/sfoutsidelands/status/756176017715331072 For those not attending the fest (which includes Rock Cellar Magazine, as we are unable to make it this year), a livestream was also announced that will allow folks to watch select sets from the weekend’s festivities. From…
