Stream ‘History Repeats,’ the New Solo Single from Alabama Shakes Singer/Guitarist Brittany Howard

On September 20, Brittany Howard, lead vocalist/guitarist of the revered blues/rock band Alabama Shakes, will release her debut solo album, Jaime.

The news was revealed on Tuesday, along with the track “History Repeats” — a jangly, funky, percussive song that puts Howard’s talents on full display:

This came during a period of downtime for Alabama Shakes, whose most recent studio album as a band was 2015’s Sound & Color — which earned them four Grammy Awards.

As for her new solo endeavor, Howard explained a bit about the idea in a statement that came with the news:

In the statement, Howard explains that the album’s title, Jaime, is a reference to her sister, who passed away when the two were teenagers:

“The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being. But, the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.”
