One of the most poignant performances at the Grammys’ In Memoriam segment during Sunday’s broadcast was six-time Grammy winner Brandi Carlile paying homage to country legend John Prine.

Carlile delivered a powerful rendition of “I Remember Everything,” the final song Prine recorded before his death in April and the track that quickly become his very first No. 1 single posthumously. The song also won a pair of Grammys on Sunday, for Best American Roots Song and Best American Roots Performance.

Carlile’s musical salute to Prine earned a very warm reception, and following Sunday’s live performance, a recorded version of her cover was released via Oh Boy Records. It’s a preview of Broken Hearts and Dirty Windows: Songs of John Prine, Vol 2, a new tribute album that will be released in the fall.

Hear the recorded version below:

Said John Prine’s widow, Fiona Whelan Prine, of the tribute:

“My sons and I thank the Recording Academy for recognizing John’s final recording. Brandi’s beautiful performance was perfect. We miss John but are grateful too for the incredible legacy he left us—songs to enjoy and to learn about his capacity to love unconditionally.”

And Brandi Carlile: “John Prine is a hero and one of the most important and significant songwriters of our time. I feel so lucky to have called him a friend. It was an absolute honor of my life to pay tribute to him on the Grammy stage. His songs will live forever.”
