This week’s installment of #NoFunMondays, the weekly covers series launched by Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong in late March, will burrow itself in your brain for days (weeks?) to come.

For his latest cover, Armstrong tackled the theme song to the 1996 comedy/drama That Thing You Do!, written and directed by Tom Hanks. The film, chronicling the rise and fall of fictional 1960s one-hit wonders The Wonders (or The Oneders, if you’re an original fan), featured an irresistible title track penned and recorded by Adam Schlesinger.

A few weeks back, Schlesinger tragically passed away from the coronavirus, and Billie Joe Armstrong dedicated his cover to the esteemed songwriter in his memory:

Here’s the full song:

This cover is especially timely, as it comes days after members of the film’s cast took part in a YouTube viewing party/commentary session in an effort to raise funds for MusiCares’ COVID-19 Relief Fund, also in memory of Schlesinger.

Recent entries in Armstrong’s #NoFunMondays covers series from Billie Joe Armstrong include a take on the Bangles “Manic Monday,” featuring a guest spot from Susanna Hoffs:

Last week’s cover, meanwhile, saw Armstrong paying tribute to Bay Area punk band the Avengers, whom he considers an inspiration:

Armstrong also took part in this past weekend’s One World: Together At Home global broadcast event in support of first responders and those dealing with COVID-19, performing his band’s “Wake Me Up When September Ends”:
