On August 26, Omnivore Records will dive deep into the Beach Boys‘ vaults to release Becoming The Beach Boys: The Complete Hite & Dorinda Morgan Sessions, a collection of previously unheard recordings from the very beginning of the legendary group’s storied career.
The collection will span 62 tracks, with 40 of them having not been released previously. Here’s an early version of Surfer Girl, as premiered by Rolling Stone, that has a drastically different sound from the one we all know and love:

2016 is the 55th anniversary of the Beach Boys’ earliest recordings, a fitting opportunity to unleash a set such as this. When Rock Cellar Magazine spoke with Beach Boys historian/Becoming the Beach Boys author James B. Murphy, he shined some light on Hite and Dorinda Morgan, key figures in the early days of the group’s career:
Hite and Dorinda Morgan, a husband and wife songwriting team in their late 40s, were friends of Audree and Murry Wilson for a decade before the Wilson brothers decided they wanted to make a record.  The Morgans recorded aspiring artists in a make-shift recording studio in their living room and produced the first nine recordings by the Beach Boys, including Surfin’ and early versions of Surfin’ Safari and Surfer Girl.  And yet, after fifty years, hundreds of magazine articles, more than a dozen books, and several documentaries about the band, I knew very little about the Morgans and had never seen a photograph of them.

Under the Morgans, the young Beach Boys recorded nine songs in the fall of 1961 before signing their seven-year contract with Capitol Records in May 1962. Of those recordings, as the press release says:
Some iconic, others obscure — “Surfin’,” “Luau,” “Lavender,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “Surfer Girl,” “Judy,” “Beach Boy Stomp” (aka “Karate”), “Barbie,” and “What Is A Young Girl Made Of”— Every surviving take, false start, master take and studio banter during these historic recordings is gathered on this landmark collection, Becoming The Beach Boys: The Complete Hite & Dorinda Morgan Sessions.
Here’s a trailer for the collection:
