beabadoobee, the buzzworthy singer/songwriter (real name: Bea Kristi) who unleashed her dynamic debut album, Fake It Flowers, last fall, returned this week with Our Extended Play, a new EP featuring four new songs co-written and produced by Matty Healy and George Daniel of English pop/rock band The 1975.

The first song shared from the EP was “Last Day On Earth,” a particularly 1990s-inspired slice of indie/pop with an even more stylized music video:

The song’s inspiration came about when considering life had the COVID-19 pandemic not torn a hole in our collection experience in Spring 2020.

“’Last Day On Earth’ is about all the things I would have done had I known we were going into a lockdown and the world was going to change the way it has,” said beabadoobee in a statement. “It was written shortly after the first main lockdown and lyrically it’s me reflecting on how it would feel if we all knew ahead of time what was going to happen. All the things I would have done if I knew it was the last day of our old normality. I wrote and recorded the EP on a farm with Matty and George from The 1975 in the countryside. It was really nice being able to create together, my first time writing and recording in that kind of setting. I wanted to experiment on the sounds and sonics even more and the EP to me has a feeling of togetherness to it… how we’re all in this joined as one.”

“Cologne” also received a music video with the EP’s release:

“Making the music video for ‘Cologne’ was so much fun,” said Bea on the collaboration with Slowthai collaborators The Rest on the video. “I worked with The Rest, who I knew from their work with Slowthai. We wanted to make an action movie with a load of my friends so that’s what we did!”

A news release notes that the new music was written with Healy and Daniel in the early days of the COVID-19 lockdown on the English countryside.

“This EP was made in a really collaborative way during a time where it was really difficult to do that and I feel so lucky to have gotten to make it with my band and Matty and George,” Bea said. “I hope it can bring people together in some way, that’s really what these songs are about, that feeling of togetherness that’s been missing a lot in the last year. It feels like a bridge to what’s coming next too.”
