Instead, a spurt of creativity and inspiration led to “WHAT YOU GONNA DO???”, an urgent new song that premiered on Thursday. The song features Graham Coxon, known for years as the lead guitarist of English rock band Blur, and the song’s video can be seen below:

The video is the result of Bastille collaborating with a British/Iranian animator, and captures the song’s themes rather effectively.

Explained Bastille front man Dan Smith of the song and how it came about:

“This next phase feels like a new beginning. It’s about completely tearing up our process, being spontaneous and starting again,” Dan states. “We’re just really excited by the new songs. I think we’re making some of the best music we’ve ever made. We want to put it out now and not wait for the whole album to be done before anyone starts to hear it. This is about where we are now and hearing us in real-time.”

Despite the song’s lyrical topicality to the world around us amid the COVID-19 pandemic and everything else going on, “WHAT YOU GONNA DO???” was written before this current state of affairs.

Bastille’s most recent album was 2019’s Doom Days, which was the group’s third full-length to date.
