For three glorious nights, Jeff Lynne’s ELO taught a musical history lesson at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. Each show was capped with a rousing bit of fireworks, and we’re not just talking about Lynne’s setlist. https://twitter.com/RockCellarMag/status/775154070331854849 For decades, the songs of Lynne and ELO have stood the test of time, becoming modern classics revered basically unanimously and, as was evident at the Bowl on Sunday night, appreciated by young and old alike. As Sunday’s show came on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks in New York City, the show was opened by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and conductor…

KCSN 88.5 FM’s Jim Nelson returns with another Turn Me On profile, this time highlighting Blind Pilot… ______________________________ What’s that old Yiddish proverb? Man plans, God laughs? Or as Woody Allen put it, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” Life certainly does have a way of letting us know that our own plans pale compared with the bigger picture, as Blind Pilot songwriter Israel Nebeker rudely discovered in 2013. Just when he was beginning to write for what would become the Portland, Oregon, folk-pop band’s third full-length CD, his own footing crumbled from the onslaught of rapid-fire losses of…

88.5 KCSN-FM’s Jim Nelson is back with another entry in our Turn Me On category, this time shining his light on Shane Alexander… “Do you think of me once in a while?” That’s it. That’s the line where Shane Alexander reels you in on the lead single from his sixth and latest CD, Bliss. Rendered, as it is, at the climax of another of Alexander’s seemingly endless parade of hooks, you hear it several times during Something Real Never Dies. In those nine words, Alexander nails songwriting nirvana—relatability; universality—that sweet spot where a phrase can connect with absolutely everyone who…

It’s finally here: Down in a Hole, the debut album from actor Kiefer Sutherland. Sutherland, a celebrated actor known for his role as Jack Bauer in the TV series 24 among many other projects over the years, has been cultivating his skills as a musician for a while now and it all comes together nicely on Down in a Hole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7lUCghDJ7w A twangy, country-influenced affair, Sutherland’s voice is matched with some stellar musicianship throughout the album’s 11 tracks, all of which were co-written by the man himself. The release of the album comes as Sutherland is about to star in…

Flash back roughly 10 years. Axl Rose was still putting the finishing touches on Chinese Democracy, his infamous in-the-works Guns N’ Roses album that finally saw the light of day in 2008. Around that time, the thought of  Rose and guitarist Slash reconvening again seemed absolutely out of the question. Well, it wasn’t, as GnR’s boisterous Not In This Lifetime tour (an outing named after Rose’s own promise a few years back that they’d never share the stage together again) crashed into Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on August 18 for the first of a two-night, hometown run. An impressively large number…

The recent reunion news from Temple of the Dog — the early ’90s project featuring Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and Pearl Jam’s Jeff Ament, Mike McCready and Stone Gossard (with an assist from Eddie Vedder) — was rather loud, considering the band mapped out a 25th anniversary few saw coming. In celebration of that and the also-announced reissue of the supergroup’s only album, Rolling Stone has premiered Black Cat, a demo take previously unheard by all but the most dedicated of Temple fans. Stream the track below: The reissued album is up for pre-order now and will be released on September 30.…
