The Rolling Stones’ 50th Anniversary Edition of ‘Beggars Banquet’ is Out Now (Listen)

1968 was a banner year for music, that much is certain. In the past couple of weeks alone, we’ve seen special 50th anniversary releases of Small Faces’ Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake (read our feature here), the KinksThe Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society (read our feature here), the Jimi Hendrix Experience‘s Electric Ladyland (read our feature here) and the BeatlesWhite Album (read our new feature interview with producer Giles Martin here). Today, the Rolling Stones are added to the mix, with a 50th anniversary reissue of Beggars Banquet hitting the proverbial shelves.

As you’d expect, it’s made available in fancy reissued and remastered format, with all the bells and whistles:

The limited edition vinyl package will come in gatefold jacket, with a bonus 12” of their hit single “Sympathy for the Devil” in Mono cut at 45rpm, backed with an etching of the original ‘toilet’ cover. Also included is a replica of the rare Japanese bonus flexi disc containing a phone interview with Mick Jagger from 1968, and a download code for the album plus interview. The landmark album has been newly mastered by Grammy Award® winning engineer Bob Ludwig, lacquers cut at Abbey Road and pressed at RTI in California on 180g vinyl.

Soooo … That’s it? Just a good sounding version of the album and a flex-disc of a mono version of “Sympathy” and a thing on the other side? No outtakes? No demos? Looks like The Beatles outdid The Stones yet again.

I don’t mean to complain, and to those that will say, “But it’s a great album as it is without all the features!” Well, the same could have been said about Imagine, The White Album and Sgt. Pepper, but they decided to do more than release the same damn album a 500th time. They made it worth purchasing.

Believe me, I don’t need to hear Beggar’s Banquet one more goddamned time. I’ve heard it a million times over in my 50 years of life and own like 3 copies already. I don’t need a fourth. But I did need a fourth copy of The White Album, the third copy of Imagine and the fifth copy of Sgt. Pepper and I’m about to buy some Paul McCartney albums yet again because they’re loaded with shit I haven’t heard before and want to own.

So yeah. This disappointing. To say the least. If they do this for Let It Bleed then I’m out!
