Celebrate Joe Strummer’s Birthday by Previewing The New ‘Joe Strummer 001’ Box Set, Out 9/28

On this date (August 21) in 1952, John Graham Mellor — better known to you as Joe Strummer — was born. And while he became something of a music icon for his groundbreaking work as the front man and focal point for the Clash, the genre-bending U.K. outfit that would influence countless acts in their wake, he was a prolific solo artist as well.

A new box set, Joe Strummer 001, will be released on Sept. 28 (and can be pre-ordered right now by clicking here) that brings together a wealth of material from his extensive solo recording career. To preview the set and commemorate what would have been his 66th birthday, here’s a video featuring several song clips from the new collection:

Joe’s widow, Luce, and Robert Gordon McHarg III were in charge of compiling and overseeing the archiving of this set, and engineer Peter J. Moore helmed that aspect of the proceedings.

“On going through cassettes and recording tapes it was discovered that Joe was rather frugal and keen on hiding tracks. On cassettes he would leave 20 minutes between songs. On the 1″ 8 track recordings it was discovered there were hidden tracks superimposed onto each other. For example tracks 1-4 were taken by one song and tracks 5-8 by two other songs which were thought when played back to be caused by tape denigration until the tapes went to Peter J Moore who was able to separate one song from another.”
