Green Day’s 2004 Hit ‘American Idiot’ Climbs U.K. Charts Before President Trump’s Visit

In 2004, Green Day‘s politically charged “American Idiot” was a massive hit for the Bay Area punk/rock band, as part of their monumentally successful concept album of the same name.

Now, 14 years later, the song has re-entered the public consciousness in the U.K. thanks to a viral campaign to get the song back on the charts for President Trump’s upcoming visit to the country.

Trump is expected to visit the U.K. starting on July 12, and, as Billboard reported, the song is currently No. 18 on the U.K. charts.

This is the work of a social media group calling itself “American Idiot For UK No. 1 When Trump Visits,” which hit the Internet hard in order to make this happen.

The song was originally written about then-President George W. Bush. Armstrong is no stranger to political comments on his social media pages and at the band’s shows, including their recent recent world tour dates.
